Music is processed throughout the brain and has shared networks with other areas. There is not one part of the brain that processes music. This provides a great tool to work around damaged areas of the brain and help build new connections. Music is processed without needing to focus on it and individuals have automatic responses to music. Because music is processed in time and can be easily adapted, it can be used as a tool for generalizing skills, addressing multiple goal areas, and improving many nonmusical areas.
During Music Therapy, individuals and groups may play instruments, sing, write songs, listen to live music, or move to music. Prior music experience or aptitude for music is not required to benefit.
